Mel Charles is Director of Automatic Enrolment at the UK Pension Regulator (TPR). He has over a decade of experience in pensions regulation and led the design and delivery of the operation of Automatic Enrolment for UK employers and their employees. As Director, Mel is responsible for all aspects of the regulatory operation from communications and customer support to IT systems and enforcement. Previously, Mel was Director of Transformation where he led the review and re-design of TPR’s regulatory strategy, approach and operating model for UK pension schemes. He is a member of the TPR Executive Committee and frequent advisor to the TPR Board. Mel undertakes extensive external engagement, including conferences and expert panels as well as multi-agency initiatives such as the development of a joint pensions strategy with the Financial Conduct Authority. Prior to joining TPR, he held a range of positions in central government departments covering justice, international development and business. He is a qualified Solicitor, risk management specialist and has sponsored and directed a range of programmes and projects.
