The Thalassaemia International Federation is delighted to announce the organisation of the TIF European Thalassaemia & Sickle Cell Disease Symposium. The Symposium will take place between 11 – 13 December 2020, virtually.
Organized in the context of TIF’s internationally renowned educational programme, the Symposium presents an excellent opportunity for participating doctors and patients to exchange knowledge on the latest scientific advances in the field, share concerns and challenges, and contribute to the development of the Three C’s for Patient Organisations: Capacity, Competency and Confidence.
A unique occasion for a discussion that will cover the latest advances in research, recent regulatory authorisations of therapies for the care and cure of these diseases, as well as the multidisciplinary care required for appropriate clinical management through case presentations. Simultaneously, a special focus on patients’ disease education and capacity building will facilitate the empowerment of the patient/parent community, whose strong and competent representation and participation is extremely important at all levels of decision-making bodies and processes leading to more productive and successful outcomes.

The Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in 1986 by a small group of patients and parents representing mainly National Thalassaemia Associations in Cyprus, Greece, UK, USA and Italy; that is, countries who first recognised thalassaemia as an important public health issue and who began to promote and implement the first national programmes for thalassaemia control, including prevention and clinical management. TIF was officially registered under Cyprus Company Law in 1987, and since 1996 it has worked in official relations with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
Through the years, TIF has established collaborations and networks with a number of other official health orientated agencies and associations, and patient orientated organizations at the national, regional and international level. Today, TIF has evolved into an umbrella federation, with 232 member associations, in 62 countries of the world (Last update: December 2019), safeguarding the rights of patients to quality health and other care.
