The war in Ukraine has created a new asymmetric shock following a similar one caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire world, and especially the EU, is once again facing enormous challenges at every level, but especially from an economic perspective. The international geopolitical scene has changed in an unprecedented way. Some called it “a turning point” and others “the end of the complacency era”.

The Limassol Economic Forum, a benchmark event of global importance held annually in Limassol, Cyprus, will set the spotlight on these extraordinary conditions providing guidance to the business leaders of Cyprus and abroad.

Susana Elisa Pavlou
Director, Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies (MIGS)

Susana Elisa Pavlou is an internationally recognized gender equality expert with over 18 years’ experience in project management, research and analysis, and strategic policy development. She has specific expertise in the area of preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, and has served as a senior researcher and expert for the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), the Council of Europe, and UN Women, among others. She is a firm advocate for civil society in Cyprus and holds an MSc in International Politics with an area concentration in the Middle East from the School of Oriental and African Studies SOAS), London University.

Constantinos Petrides
Minister of Finance, Republic of Cyprus

Constantinos Petrides assumed office as Minister of Finance of the Republic of Cyprus on the 3rd of December 2019. Prior to his appointment, he served as Minister of Interior (1 May 2017 - 3 December 2019) and Deputy Minister to the President of the Republic of Cyprus (1st March 2013 – 30 April 2017). From September 2011 to February 2013 was the Director of the Office of the President of the Democratic Rally. In 2006 he was hired at the European Commission in Brussels where he worked as an economist at the Directorate-General for Agriculture and the Directorate General for Competition until September 2011. He studied Economics at the University of Nottingham and then acquired an MSc in Political Economy of Transition in Europe from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences.

Dr Alexis Antoniades
Associate Professor and Director of International Economics, Georgetown University Qatar

Dr Alexis Antoniades is an Associate Professor and Director of International Economics at Georgetown University in Qatar. A Fulbright scholar with a Ph.D. in economics from Columbia University, he is an expert on global markets and a leading authority on the economies of the Gulf countries. His current research is on big data, prices, and job vacancies. Prof Antoniades previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and at Princeton University, as the recipient of the prestigious Niehaus Fellowship. In Qatar, Dr. Antoniades frequently advises the leadership of both public and private sector organizations.

Dr Sofronis Clerides
Professor of Economics, and Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management, University of Cyprus

Sofronis Clerides is Professor of Economics and Dean of the School of Economics and Management at the University of Cyprus. He studied at the University of Wisconsin and at Yale University. He has research and/or teaching experience at the World Bank, the European University Institute, and Yale, Georgetown and Northwestern universities. His research on firm and consumer behavior has been published in prestigious international scientific journals. He has written many articles and conducted several studies on issues concerning the Cypriot economy and has served Cyprus from several posts, including the National Economic Council. He currently serves on two company boards.

Dr Michael Haliassos
Professor and Chair for Macroeconomics and Finance, Goethe University Frankfurt, and Director of the CEPR Network on Household Finance, CEPR, Germany

Michael Haliassos holds the Chair of Macroeconomics and Finance at Goethe University Frankfurt. He is Research Fellow of CEPR and of NETSPAR, Founding Director of the CEPR Network on Household Finance, Executive Board member of the IMFS, and advisor to the ECB on the Survey of Household Finances and Consumption since its inception in 2006. He received a B.A. from Cambridge University, and a Ph.D. from Yale University under the supervision of Nobel Laureates James Tobin and William Nordhaus. Haliassos' research interests lie in Macroeconomics and Finance with emphasis on household finance, where he has been among the early contributors.

Annita Demetriou
President of the House of Representatives, Republic of Cyprus

Annita Demetriou, is the first woman and the youngest person to serve as President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus. She was elected as a Representative in 2016 and re-elected in 2021. She is an Ambassador of the global network of women politicians - Women Political Leaders (WPL) and represents Cyprus in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). She participates in the Conference of Speakers of EU Parliaments (EUSC), in the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of the Council of Europe, the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA), the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth as well as in the Conference of Presidents of Parliaments of Small European States. She aims for and strives towards the advancement of parliamentary work, the modernisation and digital transformation of the functioning of the House of Representatives as well as the strengthening of the communication with the citizens, within an interactive framework. Her priorities include, among other issues, the promotion of human rights, the eradication of gender stereotypes, the protection of the environment and the strengthening of parliamentary diplomacy.

Matt Sechovsky
Associate Director, Political Risk, Fitch Solutions, UK

Matt Sechovsky joined Fitch Solutions in 2019 and covers a wide range of political risks with a focus on EMEA. Before joining Fitch Solutions, Matt led the Europe team at a London-based security consultancy. Prior to that, he worked for a British development aid consultancy and the Czech Foreign Ministry in Prague. He holds a BSc in International Relations and Economics from the University of Economics in Prague, and an MA in Conflict, Security and Development from King's College London.

Natasa Pilides
Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Republic of Cyprus

Natasa Pilides was appointed Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry on July 10th 2020. She had previously served as the Republic of Cyprus’ first Shipping Deputy Minister (appointed March 1st 2018) and as Director General of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (Invest Cyprus), from April 2016 to March 2018. She has more than fifteen years of private sector experience, notably as Director and Regional Chief Operating Officer at Baker Tilly South East Europe, heading the departments of Finance, Marketing, HR, Administration, Operations and IT, for Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova. She also worked in audit and tax consulting at PwC in Cyprus, Milan and London. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus and holds a first-class honours degree, with distinction, in Modern Languages and Literature (French and Italian), from Oxford University.

Constantinos Papalucas
Coordinator of the National Hydrogen Committee, Hellenic Republic & Founder, EastMed Energy Hub

Constantinos Papalucas is an Energy Policy/EastMed Specialist. He served as a Senior advisor to the Greek Minister of Environment and Energy and is currently leading the National Hydrogen Committee. He coordinates the Greek participation in the Important Projects of Common European Interest on Hydrogen putting the first Greek hydrogen projects in the pipeline. He also led the joint task force between the Greek Ministry and the U.S. Department of Energy that jointly developed a regional CCUS concept in Greece. During his tenure he has landed several world class major energy corporations to assess various upstream and midstream opportunities in Greece and invest in green technology ventures. In the past he served as an Associate at Harvard’s Belfer Center and at the U.S. Congress Energy&Commerce Committee. Constantinos is a graduate of Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Kornelios S. Korneliou
Ambassador and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Cyprus

Ambassador Kornelios S. Korneliou studied Political Science, Philosophy and American Cultural History in Munich, Germany. Since 1989, Ambassador Korneliou is a member of the Diplomatic Service of the Republic of Cyprus. He served at the Embassy of Cyprus in Germany, in Austria, in France, as Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels, whereas he served as President of the Committee of the Permanent Representatives (COREPER) during the first Presidency of Cyprus of the Council of the European Union in 2012. He also served as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and as Secretary General of European Αffairs. He took over as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus on 1 April 2020. Ambassador Korneliou has received several decorations from Germany, Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Greece, Poland and the Holy See. He has also been awarded an Honorary doctor from the European University of Serbia.

Fiona Mckergow
High Commissioner to Cyprus, Australian High Commission in Cyprus

Fiona McKergow is a career civil servant with experience across the Australian Government and has worked in a range of foreign policy, trade, humanitarian, and development roles focused role in the Pacific and South Asia. Prior to joining DFAT, Ms McKergow worked closely with the diplomatic network, industry and other government agencies on climate change policy and programming, live export trade, market access and trade negotiations and biosecurity issues. She began her career as wildlife officer before moving into a variety of policy roles that included assessment of international world heritage sites, international child adoption policies, environment management in Australia’s external territories, international fisheries policy issues and offshore refugee processing arrangements.

Satybaldy Burshakov
Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Israel and Cyprus Ambassador

Satybaldy Burshakov joined Kazakh Foreign Ministry in November 1993 and he was posted to the Kazakh Embassy in Hungary from 1995 to 2000. He served at the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Belgium and was Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to UNESCO. Mr Burshakov was engaged in the parliamentary diplomacy in his capacity as Head of the Department of Inter-Parliamentary Relations, Senate Administration and prior to his departure to Paris headed the Department of International Relations and Protocol in Mazhilis, lower chamber of the Parliament of Kazakhstan. During his tenure he also was a Secretary of the Kazakh Parliamentary Delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. Before his appointment as Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Israel and Cyprus he served at the Administration of the President of Kazakhstan as Head of the Foreign Policy Center. In 2021 he has been awarded a Cyprus Diplomat of the Year Awards.

Elke Merks-Schaapveld
Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cyprus

Ambassador Elke Merks-Schaapveld graduated in Contemporary History from the University of Leiden (1996), the Diplomatic Academy of the MFA (2003) and from the Ecole Nationale d’ Administration (2009) in Strasburg (Suma Cum Laude). She has been consultant at KPMG for several years, followed by numerous positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands: Policy officer on nuclear and non-proliferation affairs, First Secretary at the Embassy in Washington, First Secretary in Paris, Head of Cluster Security Council in The Hague, Chef cabinet EU Special Representative for the Sahel in Brussels, Head Political Dept/ Political Counsellor in Ankara. From the summer of 2020 she is Ambassador to Cyprus. Mrs. Merks-Schaapveld speaks several languages: Dutch (mother tongue), Fluent in French and English, Good proficiency in Portuguese and German, Basic knowledge of Turkish.

Myrto Zambarta
Head, European Commission Representation in Cypru

Myrto Zambarta was appointed Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus on 1st September 2021. She joined the European Commission in 2005, in the Directorate-General for Trade, where she spent most of her Commission career, working on issues such as financial services, trade defence and investment and negotiating EU trade agreements. She has also served as a Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Christos Stylianides in the Juncker Commission, dealing with humanitarian aid and crisis management. Prior to joining the European Commission, she worked as a solicitor for the London firm Travers Smith. She is a graduate of Cambridge University, UK, where she read Law. Her postgraduate studies were in Banking and Finance Law (LL.M) and Finance (MSc) from the University of London. She speaks English and French; Greek is her mother tongue.

Simon MacAdam
Senior Global Economist, Capital Economics, UK

Simon MacAdam has been working at Capital Economics – a macroeconomic research house based in London – for the past seven years. In this time, he has covered UK macro, commodity and financial markets, and has spent the past five years producing research on global macro, with a particular interest in inflation. His other research interests include labour markets, monetary policy, and political economy. He holds an MSc in Economic History from the LSE, and a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Durham University.

Evgenios Evgeniou
Chairman, Invest Cyprus

Evgenios Evgeniou studied Mechanical Engineering (BEng (Hons)) at Imperial College, University of London. A Chartered Accountant – Fellow (FCA) of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). He participated in several leadership development programs of PwC including programs organized in collaboration with INSEAD and Harvard Business School. Commenced his career in 1990 in PwC London, became a Partner in PwC Cyprus in 2001 and Chairman and CEO from 2012 to 2021. From July 2014 to December 2021, he was Member of the Leadership Team of PwC Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) representing fifteen European territories. He provided services to organisations in the Financial Services and Energy industries. He participated in the drafting of the study on the long-term economic strategy for Cyprus “Vision 2035”. Upon the conclusion of his second five-year term as Chairman and CEO, and given the limitation of two terms, he left from PwC. As of June 2022, he is the Chairman of the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (Invest Cyprus). He is also a member of the Council of the University of Cyprus, a member of the National Board for Research and Innovation.

Lysandros Ioannou
Executive Chairman, PHC Franchised Restaurants Public LTD

Lysandros Ioannou is the Executive Chairman and major shareholder of PHC Franchised Restaurants Public Ltd, the leader of Restaurant, Cafés and Catering Industry in Cyprus. The PHC Group operates more than 100 units (Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell, Wagamama, Caffé Nero, Jamie’s Italian, PAUL Burger King etc) in Cyprus and Greece employing more than 2300 persons. Graduate of the London School of Economics, he worked for Pepsi Cola International as Vice President Marketing (Middle East, Africa &Easter Europe) as well as Regional Vice President for Greece and the Balkans. He also worked for Procter & Gamble in different Marketing Assignments in Europe. Both the companies of the Group he leads and Lysandros Ioannou personally have been repeatedly recognised in Cyprus and abroad.

Head of Financial Advisory Services, Deloitte Cyprus

Nicos S. Kyriakides is the Financial Advisory Services Leader of Deloitte Cyprus. He has extensive experience of more than 38 years in Audit, Corporate Finance, Insolvency, Business Consulting and International Tax planning. He has led a large number of Consultancy and Financial Advisory projects across different industries relating to Valuations, Mergers and Acquisitions and Due Diligence Reviews, Reorganisations of Groups of companies, Capital and Debt Restructurings, Evaluation of NPL portfolios, Forensic and Insolvency work, Fairness Opinion Reports and Public Offerings. Nicos has prepared studies for the financing of Renewable Energy projects, Marinas, Golf courses, Hotels and large Real Estate Development projects. Nicos is a Chartered Accountant, fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW), member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC), and holds a B.Sc. in Economics (Accounting & Finance) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is also a licensed insolvency practitioner in Cyprus.

Yannis Matsis
Managing Director, Head of Cyprus, MUFG Investor Services

Yannis Matsis heads the new MUFG Investor Services office in Cyprus, expected to grow to 300 staff over the coming 4-5 years. Previously, Yannis served as CEO of Hellenic Bank Group, as Global Head of Credit, Interest Rate and Foreign Exchange Derivatives at Mizuho in London, and as Global Head of Credit Derivatives at ING Barings in London. He also co-founded Point Nine, a Financial Technologies company, recently acquired by MUFG. Yannis currently serves as Chairman of the Boards of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics and Point Nine Data Trust. He previously served as Chairman of the Boards of the Association of Cyprus Banks and of Artemis Bank Information Systems, and as Member of the Boards of Hellenic Bank and the European Banking Federation in Frankfurt.

Panicos Nicolaou
Chief Executive Officer, Bank of Cyprus

Panicos Nicolaou is the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Member of the Board of Directors of Bank of Cyprus since September 1, 2019. He joined the Bank in January 2001 and started his career serving mainly in the Corporate and Credit Risk departments. He was the Manager in the Restructuring and Recoveries Division until June 2016. From June 2016 he served as Director of Corporate Banking Division. He holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in Greece, and an MSc in Mechanical & Industrial Engineering from the University of Illinois in the USA. He also holds a BSc in Financial Services from the School of Management, UMIST in the UK.

Niklas Swanström
Executive Director, Insititute for Security and Development Policy, Sweden

Dr. Niklas Swanström is the Director of the Institute for Security and Development Policy, and one of its co-founders. He is a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a Senior Associate Research Fellow at the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI). His main areas of expertise are conflict prevention, conflict management and regional cooperation; Chinese foreign policy and security in Northeast Asia; the Belt and Road Initiative, traditional and non-traditional security threats and its effect on regional and national security as well as negotiations. His focus is mainly on Northeast Asia, Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

Andreas Neocleous
CΕO, Cyta

Andreas Neocleous is the first CEO of Cyta, Cyprus’ largest telecommunications organisation, to have been appointed from the private sector. On assuming his duties in January 2019, he redefined the organisation’s vision and set it on a course of growth and dynamic evolution, which has since resulted in a significant increase in revenue and profitability. Elias Neocleous

Elias Neocleous is the Managing Partner of Elias Neocleous & Co LLC, Cyprus’ largest and most progressive international law firm. Senior Economist, ING, Belgium

Charlotte de Montpellier is Senior Economist at ING Belgium. She is responsible for economic forecasts for France and Switzerland and closely follows European and global macroeconomic developments. She has been working at ING since 2018, and before that was a research and teaching assistant at one of Belgium’s major universities, UCLouvain.

Constantinos Herodotou
Governor, Central Bank of Cyprus

Constantinos Herodotou is the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) and a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank. Previously he served as an Executive Director on the CBC’s Board of Directors (2017-2019). He also held the position of the Commissioner of Privatisations in Cyprus (2014-2017). Before moving to Cyprus in 2014, most of his career was in investment banking at UBS Investment Bank in London, where he rose through the ranks to head concurrently two sectors: Shipping for Europe, Middle East, and Africa and simultaneously Infrastructure & Concessions Advisory / Project Finance for Central & Eastern Europe. He has advised governments and global conglomerates on major financial transactions and strategies, totaling a value of over €50 billion. His experience includes among others structuring and heading complex negotiations, mergers and acquisitions, project concessions, listing companies on stock exchanges (NASDAQ and NYSE), structuring and raising equity and debt, corporate and financial restructurings, and project finance. Constantinos Herodotou holds an MBA from London Business School and a BSc in Economics from University College London.

The Limassol Economic Forum is addressed to business leaders and decision-makers such as Board Members, CEOs, Managing Directors, and other senior management executives from all the major corporations in Cyprus and abroad. The Forum also normally welcomes politicians, diplomats, and other government officials, but also entrepreneurs, academics, and other international experts on political and economic issues.

Attendance at the Limassol Economic Forum is by invitation, but a limited number of seats is available for non-invited guests upon request and subject to approval*.

Registration fee for non-invited applicants: €600** + 19% VAT

*Submitted registration applications are subject to approval by the organisers and will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendance at the Forum will depend on the availability of spaces and fulfillment of the target audience profile criteria. All successful applicants will receive a registration confirmation email. In the event that you do not receive such confirmation, it means that your registration has not been approved.

The Cyprus LSE Alumni Association has been founded by LSE graduates living and working in Cyprus to support the affiliation between its alumni members and LSE. The Cyprus Shipping Chamber is the trade association of the Shipping Industry in Cyprus.
