In the interconnected world of the 21st century, every action has a ripple effect. From a tweet that triggers a stock market crash, a decision to invest in renewable energy that transforms a country’s economy, to a diplomatic handshake that changes the balance of power. As we navigate this Brave New World, the 14th Limassol Economic Forum aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of our collective global agenda, its complexities and its contradictions. To challenge perspectives, spark conversations, and encourage a nuanced understanding of the intricate global network we all are part of. The world is changing faster than ever, and it’s essential to understand the various elements at play in order to make informed decisions, be it in business, policy, or our daily lives. After all, the brave new world is not just a prospect of the future; it is the reality that we inhabit today.

The Limassol Economic Forum is the biggest current affairs conference in Cyprus where business leaders, government officials, diplomats and academics discuss global issues on the economy, international relations, energy, investing, technology and entrepreneurship.

The 14th Limassol Economic Forum will serve as a unique platform where global, European and national thought leaders, policy makers, entrepreneurs, and technocrats will elaborate on the below thematic pillars:

Stavriana A. Annita Demetriou
President, House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and President of the Democratic Rally (DISY) of Cyprus

Mrs Annita Demetriou, is the first woman and the youngest person to serve as President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus. In 2016 she was first elected as a member of parliament and re-elected in 2021. She was also elected as President of the Democratic Rally (DISY) party of Cyprus on March 2023. She holds a university degree on Social and Political Sciences as well as a postgraduate title in International Relations and European Studies. She is an Ambassador of the global network of women politicians - Women Political Leaders (WPL) and represents Cyprus in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).  She participates in the Conference of Speakers of EU Parliaments (EUSC), in the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament of the Council of Europe, the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA), the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth as well as in the Conference of Presidents of Parliaments of Small European States. She aims for and strives towards the advancement of parliamentary work, the modernisation and digital transformation of the functioning of the House of Representatives as well as the strengthening of the communication with the citizens, within an interactive framework. Her priorities include, among other issues, the promotion of human rights, the eradication of gender stereotypes, the protection of the environment and the strengthening of parliamentary diplomacy.

Constantinos Kombos
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus

Dr. Constantinos Kombos was born in 1976 in Lemesos. He has studied Law and holds a postgraduate degree in EU Law (LLM University of Cambridge) as well as a PhD in European Constitutional Law (PhD University of Hull). He was elected at the Department of Law of the University of Cyprus in 2006, of which he is a founding member. He has served as chairman of the Law Department and as member of the Senate. He has published 6 books and numerous articles and chapters in scientific magazines and collective volumes. Part of his work has been translated and published in 6 languages. He has also participated and delivered speeches in numerous international conferences. He was appointed member of the Board of Judges by the Supreme Court. On behalf of the Republic of Cyprus he appeared before the Court of Justice of the European Union and has made recommendations to the House of Representatives on issues of EU Law and the Cyprus Constitution. He was appointed member of the Cyprus Problem negotiating team in 2014 and has participated in all stages and levels of the negotiation process, Geneva I, Crans-Montana, Geneva II.

George Papanastasiou
Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Republic of Cyprus

George Papanastasiou was appointed Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry on March 1st 2023. He is a mechanical engineer by profession, with an HND in Mechanical Engineering from the Higher Technical Institute of Cyprus, a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from City University London and an MSc in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning from Kings College London. He worked for 26 years at BP in Cyprus, the United Kingdom and other European countries, having held various managerial positions within the company, including Cyprus’ Head of Country. From 1st of October 2011 and until his appointment as Energy Minister, he was Managing Director and General Manager of VTT Vasiliko Ltd (VTTV), a subsidiary of Netherlands based VTTI B.V. Inter alia, during his tenure at VTTV he led a versatile team of professionals tasked with constructing and operating the oil storage terminal of the company at Vasilikos area. Over the course of his career, he has accumulated extensive experience in the oil and gas industry, specifically in the fields of Supply and Logistics, Health, Safety and Environment, Operations and Engineering, Sales and Marketing, Company Governance and Compliance. He has served as President of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Organisation for Standardisation (CYS) and the Cyprus Certification Company, President of the Cyprus – Netherlands Business Association operating under the auspices of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Member of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation.

 

Constantinos Herodotou
Governor, Central Bank of Cyprus

Constantinos Herodotou is the Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) and a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank. Previously he served as an Executive Director at the CBC’s Board of Directors (2017-2019). He also held the position of the Commissioner of Privatisations in Cyprus (2014-2017). Before moving to Cyprus in 2014, most of his career was in investment banking at UBS Investment Bank in London, where he rose through the ranks to head concurrently two sectors: Shipping for Europe, Middle East and Africa and simultaneously Infrastructure & Concessions Advisory / Project Finance for Central & Eastern Europe. He has advised governments and global conglomerates on major financial transactions and strategy, totaling a value of over €50 billion. His experience includes among others structuring and heading complex negotiations, mergers and acquisitions, project concessions, listing companies on stock exchanges (NASDAQ and NYSE), structuring and raising equity and debt, corporate and financial restructurings and project finance. Constantinos Herodotou holds an MBA from London Business  School and a BSc in Economics from University College London.

Declan Costello
Deputy Director General, Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs, European Commission

Declan Costello was born in Galway, Ireland in 1967. He has a Degree in Economics from Trinity College Dublin and a Masters' Degree from the College of Europe in Bruges. He joined the European Commission in 1991 and has worked since then in the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs. From May 2014, he has been the European Commission's Mission Chief for Greece. Since 2019, he is the Deputy Director General in DG ECFIN. He is currently responsible for supervising the work of DG ECFIN’s country desks, including the design and implementation of the Recovery and Resilience plans.

Constantinos Petrides
Former Minister of Finance, Republic of Cyprus

Dynamic and visionary policy maker with ten years of experience (2013 – 2023) in three of the most important Ministerial posts at the Government of Cyprus. Adept in making key policy decisions, crisis management and negotiation, had a key role as a coordinator during the Troika institutions negotiations with Cyprus. At the forefront of pushing through important structural reforms and improving business environment, which according to IMF and the EU, enhanced the growth prospects of the economy. Active participant and contributor to Eurogroup, ECOFIN, EU Council for Home and Justice Affairs, IMF and World Bank Summits.

Michiel Hoogeveen
Member of the European Parliament in the ECR Group for the Dutch centre right political party JA21 - Vice-Chair, Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs, Netherlands

Michiel Hoogeveen hails from Leiden, the Netherlands, and has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2021. He is Vice-Chair of the ECON Committee and an active member of INTA and FEMM. He is also active on the US and Korea delegations. Michiel began his professional career at KPMG. He has also been active in provincial politics in the Netherlands. His interest in the Korean peninsula spurred him to travel to North Korea and write a book about his discoveries. It is called “The Hermit Kingdom” and is for now available exclusively in Dutch.

Kevin Featherstone
Hellenic Observatory Director; Professorial Research Fellow, European Institute, LSE UK

Kevin Featherstone is Professorial Research Fellow and Director of the Hellenic Observatory in the European Institute, LSE. He has held visiting positions at the University of Minnesota; New York University; Harvard University and, the European University Institute (Firenze). In 2013 he was made ‘Commander, Order of the Phoenix’ by the President of the Hellenic Republic and in 2021 has was bestowed the award of ‘Grand Commander, Order of the Phoenix’ of the Hellenic Republic. In 2023, he was given honorary citizenship by the Hellenic Republic for his academic contribution.

Chris Papageorgiou
Division Chief, Research Department, IMF, USA

Chris Papageorgiou is the Division Chief in the Development Macroeconomics division of the of the IMF’s Research Department. He is also the coordinator of IMF-DFID Low-Income Country Research Program. Since joining the Fund in 2006, he has done mission work in Africa, Western Hemisphere, and Asia and Pacific, and has led IMF policy work on a variety of developing country issues. His analytical work is primarily focused on economic growth and international macroeconomics. He has published extensively, and is an associate editor of the European Economic Review and the IMF Economic Review.

Efstratios-Georgios (Takis) Arapoglou
Chairman, Bank of Cyprus Public Co Ltd

Takis Arapoglou has had an earlier career in International Capital Markets and Corporate & Investment banking based in London and later in managing, restructuring and advising publicly listed Financial Institutions and corporates, primarily in SE Europe and the Middle East. Most recent executive assignments include: Managing Director and Global Head of the Banks and Securities Industry for Citigroup; Chairman and CEO of the National Bank of Greece; CEO of Commercial Banking at EFG-Hermes Holding SAE. He has broad and extensive board experience and is currently holding the following non-executive board positions: Chairman of Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN) Ltd, and Board member of EFG-Hermes Holding SAE. Mr. Arapoglou has degrees in Mathematics, Engineering and Management from Greek and British Universities.

Gianpaolo Giuseppe Giuliani
Chief Commercial Officer – Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Sunlight Group Energy Storage Systems

Gianpaolo Giuliani is a seasoned executive in Commercial and Business Development, carrying over 23 years of experience and leading a talented team of experts at Sunlight Group’s ESS division. Prior to joining Sunlight, he held significant management roles in GE across various sectors. As of 2014 Gianpaolo has been specializing in renewables and energy storage, his latest position before joining Sunlight Group being Global Sales Director of Energy Storage, a business he significantly contributed to build and grow. Gianpaolo Giuliani is a certified engineer. He holds a BS and Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino.

Natasa Pilides
Former Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Republic of Cyprus.

Natasa Pilides served as Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Cyprus between July 2020 and March 2023. Previously, she was the first Deputy Minister of Shipping of the Republic of Cyprus, a role which she took up with the inception of the Shipping Deputy Ministry on 1 March 2018. Natasa has also served as the Director General of Invest Cyprus, the arm of the government responsible for investment promotion, investor support and facilitation of reform. Natasa’s work experience includes more than fifteen years in the private sector. She served as a Director and Regional Chief Operating Officer at Baker Tilly in South East Europe, while for 9 years she worked at PwC, in Cyprus, Milan and London in the areas of audit and tax consulting. Natasa graduated from Oxford University with a first-class honours degree with distinction in Modern Languages and Literature (French and Italian). She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) and a member of the Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC).

DR. Yolanda Garcia Mezquita
Head of the Unit TF 2, Directorate-General for Energy, European Commission

Doctor in economics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. From June 2001 to April 2009, she worked as economic advisor in the Spanish National Regulatory Authority, dealing with regulation and competition issues in electricity and gas sectors. Since May 2009 she is working for the European Commission in the Directorate General for Energy. She is head of the unit TF2 “Relations with the Member States and the Energy Community” in the Energy Platform Task Force.

DR. Alex Papalexopoulos
Founder and CEO of ECCO International, Inc, CEO and Chairman of the Board of ZOME Energy Networks, Inc.

Dr. Alex Papalexopoulos (M’80–SM’85–F’01) is an authority in energy market design and implementation. He is the Founder and CEO of ECCO International a specialized consulting and software company based in San Francisco, California which provide energy market design services to Governments, Regulators, Utilities TSOs and Power Exchanges. Over the last 20 years he has designed 15 energy markets of various architectures including Nodal Energy markets, Zonal Energy markets and Bilateral markets, in North, Central and South America, Western and Eastern Europe and Asia. He is also the CEO and Chairman of the Board of ZOME Energy Networks, based in San Francisco, California and holder of 13 patents, which focuses on smart grid development services and blockchain technologies for the emerging decentralized Transactive Energy future in the energy sector. He has published hundreds of papers in refereed scientific journals, he is the 1992 recipient of PG&E’s Wall of Fame Award and the 1996 recipient of IEEE’s First Prize Paper Award. In 2016 he was bestowed the award of the honorary Professor at the University of Patras, Patra, Greece. He received the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Diploma from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia.

Irina Kustova
Research Fellow, Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS)

Irina Kustova is a Research Fellow at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), specialising in energy and climate policy. Irina’s expertise lies in energy transition and security, with a particular focus on EU energy markets, hydrogen and renewable gases, renewables uptake, and climate diplomacy. With over a decade of professional experience, Irina provides research and advisory services to EU institutions including the European Commission (DG ENER, DG CLIMA, FPI) and international organisations. Her analysis and expert opinion are frequently sought after by prominent media outlets and academic institutions. Irina is a published author in refereed journals and a regular speaker at conferences and events of inter alia Euractiv, IAI, SWP, and the Clean Energy Summit. Before joining CEPS, she conducted consultancy work and held several assignments at ACER and the Energy Charter Secretariat. Irina holds a Ph.D. in International Studies cum laude from the University of Trento and an MA in European Studies from Maastricht University.

Liesbeth Mol
Chair, Deloitte North South Europe

Liesbeth is Chair of the Deloitte North & South Europe (“NSE”) Board.  Prior to her election as NSE Chair, Liesbeth was an NSE Board member and a member of the Executive Board in the Netherlands. Liesbeth has also previously been the NSE Ethics Leader and chaired the NSE Public Interest Consistency Committee.  Before progressing to her Executive and Board roles, Liesbeth was a tax partner. Liesbeth is passionate about developing our purpose agenda, and has a leading role in developing diversity, in all aspects, across NSE. She is also an active participant in the Deloitte Women in Boards and Female Executives programmes.

Kyriacos Kokkinos
Former Deputy Minister to the President for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Republic of Cyprus

Kyriacos Kokkinos is the former Deputy Minister to the President for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy. He previously served as the National Chief Scientist for R&I and Chairman of the Board of the R&I Foundation. He is a distinguished technologist and professional business leader in the high-tech sector, with more than thirty years of experience in Executive Management and Consulting roles in IBM Europe (Executive Director & Partner) and PwC. He also served at Board level of many Organizations. His Academic qualifications include Executive MBA in Strategic Management from Henley Management College (UK) and MSc & BSc in Electrical Engineering from NJIT (USA).

Elias Neocleous
Managing Partner, Elias Neocleous & Co LLC

Elias Neocleous is the Managing Partner of Elias Neocleous & Co LLC, Cyprus’ largest and most progressive international law firm. He is a graduate of Oxford University, a barrister of the Inner Temple, and was admitted to the Cyprus Bar in 1993. Elias has more than thirty years’ experience successfully leading legal teams dealing with large, complex and innovative cross-border transactions. His main areas of practice are banking and finance, company matters, intellectual property law, international trade, tax and trusts and estate planning. Elias is a frequent conference guest speaker with many publications to his credit. He is a strong advocate for utilizing technology to benefit the client and is spearheading the introduction of ALSP to Cyprus via Neolaw.ai.

Dr. Kyriacos Sabatakakis
Country Managing Director, Accenture, Greece

Dr. Kyriacos Sabatakakis is the Country Managing Director of Accenture in Greece with responsibility for several markets in SE Europe, overseeing a practice of 2,200+ Consultants. He has held this position since September 2003 and has led multiple projects both in Greece and internationally on strategy, business transformation, technology, operations and digital entrepreneurship in big corporations and organizations. From 2003 to 2008, he was also responsible for Accenture’s global mobile network business. He worked for many years with Andersen Consulting in Zurich as well as high tech companies in Switzerland. He holds a BSc from Yale University, an MSc from Dartmouth College and a PhD from the National Technical University of Athens.

Roman Biller
Sales VP, EMEA East, Oracle, Austria

Roman Biller is Vice President – Technology for Oracle in the CEE region. Roman joined Oracle in 2016 as Senior Sales Director for 23 countries across Central and Eastern Europe. Within two years, Roman helped propel CEE into the top revenue growth region in EMEA. In June 2019 Roman was promoted to the position of Vice President for Technology CEE, the core line of business of Oracle. Roman brings 30 years of industry experience on a national and multinational scale. He has successfully sold and delivered innovative IT infrastructure and services across sectors and has held a number of senior positions such as the Managing Director at Unisys Austria, leading 250 employees and as CEE Cluster Senior Sales Director. Roman is reputed for applying creative approach to drive business growth and has also performed a key role in driving a number of capacity building initiatives within and outside Oracle. Roman is co-founder of digitalcity.wien, a public private partnership to raise digital awareness in Vienna, Austria and gives lectures at schools and universities. He holds a business leadership diploma of INSEAD Fontainebleau, and has successfully participated in Executive leadership programs at Navarra University in Barcelona and at the University of Michigan in Ann-Arbor. Roman was born on April 10th 1974 in Wien, Austria and is passionate about sports, culture and art. He is married with two children.

Apostolos Leonidhopoulos
Managing Director Greece & Cyprus, Kyndryl

Apostolos Leonidhopoulos is the Managing Director of Kyndryl Greece and Cyprus. In his capacity, he oversees the company’s operations, and manages relationships with some of the leading enterprises and government entities, helping them run their mission-critical IT infrastructures. Apostolos has more than 35 years of experience in helping complex organizations leverage technology to achieve their business goals. In his long tenure in the industry, he assumed multiple leadership positions in Sales and Infrastructure Services, and led several strategic IT projects across industries, helping customers to digitally transform and build modern IT infrastructures. Before joining Kyndryl, Apostolos was Manager of the Global Technology Services unit of IBM, in the same territory, where he was responsible for the sales, delivery and support of a full range of information technology products, services and solutions.

George A. Pantelides leads Deloitte’s Consulting Services in Cyprus. He is also the Chief Strategy Officer of Deloitte Cyprus and member of the Consulting Leadership Team of Deloitte Middle East. George brings deep experience, of over 20 years, in consulting, leading engagements for both international and local companies. Aristotelis Panteliadis
Chairman & CEO, METRO SA, Greece

Aristotelis Panteliadis was born and raised in Athens, Greece. He graduated from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) in 1989. During his studies, he started working at the family business. In 2001, he took over as Chief Executive Officer of METRO SA, at the age of 33. In February 2016, METRO SA acquired Veropoulos stores, thus forming one of the largest retail chains in the Greek market. Today, the company owns 280 stores, both My market retail super markets and METRO Cash & Carry wholesale markets, strategically located all over the country. The company currently employs over 11.000 people. In January 2020, METRO SA opened its first store abroad, the MCC BEST VALUE LTD wholesale store in the city of Limassol in Cyprus. Aristotelis Panteliadis is Chairman at the recently formed Greek Super-Market Union and a board member of several entities, including SEV (Hellenic Federation of Enterprises) and IELKA (Institute of Retail Consumer Goods – GR).

Vasiliki Christidi
Group General Manager, IOGR Group (SKY express), Greece

Vasiliki is the General Manager of IOGR Group of Companies since 2015, a milestone year for the transformation of the Greek based Group, active in the fields of aviation, ground handling and tourism, forging teams and inspiring them passionately. Under her active management, Vasiliki has been instrumental in transforming SKY express to an international game changer in the European market. Since November 2021 Vasiliki is a Vice President, as elected Board Member, of the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) a trade association representing more than 55 airlines and over 130 associate members of the aviation ecosystem, including aircraft manufacturers, airports, suppliers and aviation service providers. Prior to joining IOGR Group of Companies, Vasiliki held various high-level Chief Legal and Regulatory positions in major companies, among which electronic communications operators, subscription based and free broadcasters, network infrastructure providers, media and production companies, retailers and financial institutions. Vasiliki is a member of the Athens Bar Association since September 1996 and holds a bachelor’s degree in law (LL.B.) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and an LL.M. (Legal Master’s) Degree from the University of Kent in Canterbury (UK).

Kostis Rokas
Managing Director, CVC, Greece

Kostis Rokas is a Managing Director at CVC and is based in Athens. Kostis has over 15 years of professional experience primarily in private equity as well as investment banking and strategic advisory. He is responsible for sourcing opportunities, monitoring investments and supporting managements to build better businesses with sustainable growth plans. Kostis has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Yale University where he graduated magna cum laude and a Master in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Stavros Drakoularakos

Stavros Drakoularakos is the General Manager of Philip Morris Cyprus & Malta. A senior management executive, experienced in strategy, business development, commercialization, team leading and people development. With extensive studies on Management, Technology and Leadership, he has previously served as the Director of Communications at Papastratos and as the Group Managing Director for 24MEDIA. He is passionate for sustainability, content creation and public affairs.

Željana Zovko
Member of the European Parliament, EPP Group Vice-President, AFET Vice-Chair, Croatia

Željana Zovko is a Croatian diplomat and politician. Since 2016, she has been serving as a member of the European Parliament. Zovko is the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and EPP Foreign Affairs Vice-Coordinator, Vice-Chair of the Delegation for relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. She is also the EPP Group Vice-President for the relations with the US Congress and EPP members in OSCE PA, NATO PA and PACE. Zovko is also a member of the Committee on Culture and Education and the Subcommittee on Security and Defence and a member of the Delegation for relations with the United States and the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly

Andreas Hadjikyriacos founded GNORA Communication Consultants in 2003 and has been its Managing Director ever since. He was the communication consultant to presidential candidate and subsequent President of Cyprus, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, while he also managed the communication strategy for the acquisition of a private island in Greece among other projects. He holds a Master of Arts degree in Journalism from Northeastern University, Boston, and Bachelor of Arts in Journalism/Communication and Political Sciences from Indiana University. He has worked as a journalist for twenty-three years, among others, as political editor at the newspaper Phileleftheros, as news director at MEGA Cyprus and as a correspondent for the newspaper to VIMA and the Greek service of the BBC. He is the author of two book, a historical fiction and a political science book on parliamentary elections in Cyprus.

Irfan Siddiq was born and raised in London and entered the United Kingdom’s Diplomatic Service in 1998 after graduating with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University. He has worked in the Foreign Office in London on NATO issues, as Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary and as Head of the Arab Partnership Department, leading the UK’s response to the Arab Spring. He has had diplomatic postings to New Delhi, Cairo, Baghdad and Damascus, and has held positions as Ambassador to Azerbaijan and Sudan. He has also spent time outside the FCO on secondments to the US State Department in Washington and to Plan International, an NGO working on children’s rights. He assumed his role as High Commissioner to Cyprus in August 2022.

Anke Schlimm has been serving as the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cyprus since August 2021. Previously, she was Head of the Department for Domestic Public Diplomacy and International Criminal Law at the Federal Foreign Office. She has also held posts at the German Embassies in Beijing, Tel Aviv and Pretoria. Ambassador Anke Schlimm has a legal background, having studied law at the Universities of Bonn, Geneva and Freiburg.
